Body image is about perception. How you perceive your body to be. Your perception occurs in a number of ways. The most common is by the way you see yourself in the mirror. Unfortunately, this is reflection is intrinsically linked to your subjective (possibly distorted) view. When seeing a photograph, however, the cognitive process is different. The flaws you would normally see in the mirror tend to disappear. Your perception is more objective and you are able to view a beauty that you previously couldn’t see. Ultimately this helps to correct inaccurate perception of body image.
PhotoTherapy has been shown to be of benefit for many conditions, including body image dissatisfaction and eating disorders. While it is not a new technique, it is one that is not well known or commonly available.
Embodied State of Mind’s unique “Body Image PhotoTherapy” package consists of three consultations:
- In the first consultation, you will discuss with Dr. Baker the areas that are of most concern to you, how they affect your day-to-day life, and how you believe life would be different if those areas where no longer a concern. You will be asked to describe your image as you see yourself in a mirror. This consultation will end with a “mini-photoshoot”. Here, Dr. Baker will then take photographs of the areas of your body that are of most concern to you. We understand that this process can be intimidating, but it is key to resolving your body image concerns. The photoshoot takes place on our premises in a safe and secure environment.
- In the second consultation, typically scheduled a couple of days after the “mini-photoshoot”, you will receive a contact sheet from the photoshoot. You will have the opportunity to discuss with Dr. Baker how the photoshoot made you feel and as you view your photos, you will be able to discuss once again the areas that were of most concern to you as well as re-examine your perception.
- The third and final consultation, is a follow up that typically takes place a couple of weeks later. You will receive an enlargement of your favorite photo from the photoshoot, and of course, follow up with Dr. Baker on any concern you may have. Dr. Baker will also suggest ways in which you can utilize your chosen photography to help with your body image over time.
